In Taoism, there is a continuous warning for man not to be deceived by  partial goals in his life. He should focus on the Whole, on Tao. Tao is the natural innate way of responding to life. By focusing on Tao, people may be able to differentiate between true and false. Multiplicity is false, while oneness is true. When man ascribes himself to the family he descends from, the position that he occupies, and / or the money he accumulates, he leads a false life, a life that is devoid from Tao. When he embraces Tao, he can lead a balanced life.

Taoism considers the "individual a small universe that creates energy which manifests both internally and externally, so that the person himself can actually become either heaven or hell". (Hua Ching Ni, 1997:46) When man understands that Yin and Yang represent the nature of life, he can deal with his evil side and achieve pure morality. False control over desires does not create pure morality, rather, it will create dual vision and hypocrisy. The fear of an external power even if it is of a divine nature will not awaken spirituality. Morality is achieved when man lives according to the natural order.

"The natural order is for the lower attributes of the mind to serve the higher, and for the mind to be the servant of the spirit or the subtle energy which is the master over all aspects of a human being and all creation" (Hua Ching Ni, 1997:41)

In the stage of ignorance and before achieving spiritual enlightenment, man has to follow a style of life that prepares him for the higher stage. He should be honest, selfless, sincere and so on. To discern the bad from the good is a potential that should function through practices. Spiritual knowledge alone does not produce a virtuous life.

What man does, creates him. If one cultivates oneself by doing good deeds, this will serve as a personal remedy and a salvation as well as to mend ones sufferings. If one were greedy, covetous, jealous of others, ...etc, he would never be happy, satisfied,  or pleased. He will be taken away from the spiritual balance and this will be his hell.

Spiritual self-awareness is the only way to solve ones problems on a practical and spiritual level.

Only the absolute mind is able to be at a clear channel for the expansion of spiritual awareness and the experience of freedom. When we evolve beyond the realm of the dualistic and conditioned mind, then we will experience spiritual stability and live in harmony, simplicity and true freedom. This is the goal of integral self cultivation. (Hua Ching Ni, 1997:43)
